Well, I was supposed to have the week off. It just worked out that I was ‘more available’ because I wasn’t out doing official hero work. That meant I spent most of the week analyzing quirks and giving consultations to all of the heroes we had hired.
To my surprise, Fire and Ice had teamed up officially and patrolled together. It gave them a versatility that they had witnessed during the replay of my provisional exam. My examples working with Todoroki had impressed them and they wanted that kind of synergy for themselves.
The other heroes were impressed as well, so the constantly full schedule of meetings didn’t drag me down. In fact, I became more excited as the week went on, with how much the heroes accepted my suggestions and analysis as if I was a full expert in the field.
The best part about it all? Ochako Uraraka showed up on Sunday afternoon for her own consultation and brought along Tsuyu Asui, hero name Froppy. After telling me to call her Tsu, like she told all her friends to call her, I analyzed her quirk. She had the powers of a frog and told me about them, so I made comparisons to the different frog species to see how her own abilities compared.
She wasn’t based solely on a single frog species and her powers were actually crosses from several of them. Like the Tree Frog, she had the ability to stick to walls and other surfaces. She could excrete a toxic substance from her stomach, which is the same as a Poison Dart Frog, except it wasn’t as potent and mostly acted like a paralyzing agent.
Like most frogs, she was a little vulnerable to the cold and exposure to extreme cold would send her into a deep sleep, like hibernation. She also had an enhanced metabolism and a nimble body to handle swimming in almost any hostile or violent environment.
Surprisingly, she had red eyes like the Red Eye Tree Frog and she could camouflage herself to match her environment, which was a combo ability from the Vietnamese Mossy Frog, the Glass Frog, and the Gray Tree Frog. She could even store things inside of her stomach without damaging herself or the items.
However, her most outstanding feature was gained from her Toad-quirk father, which was her retractable and prehensile tongue. Unlike his much shorter one, Tsu’s was a massive 60 feet long when fully extended. It was pretty much an additional appendage for her and she could do anything with it that her arms and hands could do.
That was a phenomenal tactical advantage in almost any situation and I told her so, as well as complimenting her on how all her various powers had combined into one of the most versatile quirks I had ever analyzed.
Tsu blushed at the praise and her face barely changed expressions, which was one of the downsides of her quirk. A less expressive face, larger than normal hands, and huge feet that should have unbalanced her as she walked. On the plus side, she was surprisingly blunt and clearly stated her opinions because of her inability to show a lot of emotions on her face.
Some people were offended by her being so forward, like asking her friends to be informal and calling her Tsu. I on the other hand, thought it was refreshing and I knew that Tsu was completely open and honest about things when she spoke them. Why? Because if she stayed quiet, you knew she was hiding something and not expressing her thoughts of opinions.
“So, as far as I can tell, you’re doing wonderful with your own training and enhancing yourself and your powers.” I praised her.
Tsu kept blushing as she nodded.
“All I can really recommend is trying to produce more mucus of varying degrees for different tasks, like scent masking yourself and others or making other things stick to walls, even temporarily. That and your stomach acid could be increased in potency to be a lot more versatile like the actual Poison Dart Frog.” I added.
Both Tsu’s and Ochako’s eyes widened slightly.
“You could use a much stronger paralyzing agent to coat a baton as a close combat weapon; or better yet, use some smooth rocks you can store in your stomach and coat them with it, then use them as a blunt throwing weapon to add more versatility to your attacks.” I told her. “Even a glancing hit would cause a distraction to the villain. Plus, if you miss the target or lose them, rocks are easily replaceable.”
“Oh, my god.” Ochako whispered, clearly surprised.
“As a final thought, you can try to enhance your own sticking power by wearing a small weighted backpack. As you move around, it’ll keep you concentrating on holding on more with the extra weight trying to dislodge you. Once moving around becomes as easy as not wearing it, add slightly more weight and repeat.”
Tsu stared at me like I was giving her the secrets of the universe.
“Have you accepted an internship yet?” I asked and Tsu shook her head. “Do you want to work alongside Ochako or do you want me to give you the same option as her? You can stay near your home and patrol there for two weeks and be paid a full time wage?”
Tsu looked at Ochako and back at me, then at Ochako and back at me. “Y-yes. Ribbit.”
I almost laughed at her immediate acceptance. “I’ll assume the second part is what you want.” I said and went to my desk and opened up the top drawer. “Here’s the Hero Orientation Package. Ochako can walk you through it if you have any trouble. We just have to stop at HR after I analyze Ochako’s quirk to get you hired on officially and you can start work in the morning.”
“Th-thank you.” Tsu said and blushed again. “Ribbit.”
“Can we handle that right now? My assessment can wait until later.” Ochako said and took Tsu’s hand.
“Are you sure you want to wait?” I asked. “We have a date later today…”
“I’m sure.” Ochako said and led Tsu towards the door. “It’s not like we need to be here in the office for the assessment.”
I nodded and followed them to the second floor and we entered the HR department. Just like when we hired Ochako, the process went by smoothly and a very happy Tsu hugged her hero orientation package like it was made of gold. We left the building and Ochako didn’t seem to want to let Tsu’s hand go.
Before I could offer to fly them home, Ochako scooped Tsu up in her arms and flew into the air on her own. I chuckled at her taking the initiative and flew up after her. I made sure to cover Tsu’s face with telekinesis to ease the burden of wind on her face, especially with her much larger eyes that were so susceptible. That was probably why she wore goggles all the time when in costume, too. Eye protection.
We landed near Ochako’s apartment building and the three of us went inside and up the stairs to her apartment. It was barely a hole in the wall. It had two rooms, one was the bedroom and the other was a living room, kitchen, and laundry room combined.
“I hate to ask what the rent on this place is.” I commented.
“It’s surprisingly affordable, considering how close to downtown and UA it is.” Ochako said and pointed to the couch. “Sit and we’ll be right back. I need to change for our date.”
“Okay.” I said and sat down.
Ochako dragged Tsu into the bedroom with her and closed the door.
I glanced around and saw the place was fairly tidy, even with piles of books, papers, folded laundry, and stacked newspapers. “You know, I just realized something.” I said loud enough that they could hear me. “Why haven’t you moved into the agency? The apartments there are fantastic and are covered under your Hero Insurance for as long as you work for us.”
There was a soft thump and a muffled curse from the bedroom, which made me chuckle.
“It’s a little pointless to move in for only two weeks!” Ochako almost shouted back, clearly irritated.
I laughed. “Did you even read the contract you signed?”
“What…” Another soft thump and another muffled curse. “What do you mean?”
“Did you see a termination date anywhere on it?” I asked back as an answer.
There was quiet in the bedroom for several minutes, then the door opened and Ochako walked out wearing a bathrobe and walked by the couch and went to the kitchen table. She pulled out both the orientation package and the manila envelope that had her work contract in it. Instead of looking at it right there, she walked back into the bedroom and shut the door.
I held in my laugh this time and used X-Ray Vision on the schoolbooks she had stacked nearby. Momo had been right about the UA course not offering anything near the amount of knowledge that Shiketsu had at first.
At first. I thought with sarcasm. By the time term ended, I was pretty much ignored in favor of everyone else. Without Izuku there as a kind of bridge, and after all the bad blood between me and everyone that Ming had turned against me, I was left out in the cold. Would things have been different if I hadn’t declared myself off limits to the girls?

Melissa Shield finished her last and final shift at work after putting the final touches on a heavily modified quirk managing and temporary sharing machine that used traces of the blue mineral. She had worked on the thing all week at Connor’s request and she had been surprised that none of the other lab technicians bothered her or tried to get her to do anything else.
It had been the most relaxing time she had ever had in a mechanical engineering lab and she had thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She was also glad she had actually finished the project and she carried the thing to bring to Connor’s office. She wasn’t surprised to find no one there and left the device on his desk, set her report beside it, and gave the thing a gentle caress.
Melissa had no idea why he wanted the thing; but, she knew with his brilliant mind that he had a plan for it. Whatever it was, she was sure it was going to change how things were done in the future. It had been his idea for the necklace she wore, even if he did base it off her own father’s work.
That was the reason she had accepted the project’s commission, actually. It was proof that she was just as smart, if not smarter, than her father. She had improved on his work by an exponential degree and she was quite proud of herself for it. With a pep in her step, Melissa locked the office behind her and went to the reception desk.
“Leaving already?” The old woman there asked, amused. They both knew that Melissa had barely left the advanced lab for more than meals and to sleep.
Melissa laughed and took off her Agency ID that hung around her neck to make swiping it into the lab easier. “I’m finally done.” She said and handed her the ID. “It’s been great working here and…”
The old woman handed her the ID back. “You didn’t read the hiring contract, did you?”
Melissa took the ID back and her face was red. “M-m-maybe.”
The old woman laughed. “You were hired, period. There’s no end of term date on it.”
Melissa blinked her eyes at her. “E-excuse me?”
“You can quit, if you want to be stupid and have to start over at another agency.” The old woman said and pulled out a copy of the hiring contract. She pointed to one particular clause near the bottom.
Melissa read it out loud. “If institutional instruction is still required by the employee, then full shift work will change to part-time shift work to accommodate them until such time as they can resume full-time employment.” She stared at the clause and then at the receptionist.
“Yes, that applies to everyone, even you.” The old woman said. “Unless you have a lot of homework to catch up on, your next shift isn’t scheduled until next Saturday. If you do, just call and I’ll change it to an afternoon shift or defer it to Sunday.”
Melissa could only nod in response, too stunned to actually speak.
“Then we’ll see you next week, dearie. Have a good evening.” The old woman said.
Melissa nodded again and walked across the lobby and out into the darkness. She made it to the parking lot before the realization hit her. This wasn’t a boost to the start of her career like she thought, it was her career! She could keep working as a support tech, getting paid well, and she could keep attending UA to learn about being a real hero.
Her happy squeal matched the tires that squealed as she peeled out of the parking lot and drove back to the house she lived in with All Might. She couldn’t wait to tell him all about it!
