They reached a private office soon enough, which looked rather luxurious compared to the rest of the police station. There was a desk made from expensive wood, a bookcase filled with books that covered the walls of the room, and a large window looking outside, overlooking the streets of the city below.
There were also two comfortable-looking sofas placed in the middle of the room, facing opposite from each other, and a small coffee table between them that had a few plates of snacks on it.
On one of the couches sat a middle-aged woman dressed in a blue police shirt that looked tight around her chest area, highlighting her cleavage that seemed to be struggling to contain itself inside her shirt.
Her black skirt was skin-tight as well and rode up to just below her buttocks, which left her thick thighs bare as she wasn’t wearing any stockings underneath it, giving her a sexy appearance.
She had her silver-white hair tied up in a bun and a pair of red-rimmed glasses on her beautiful face, with light makeup that accentuated her attractive facial features even more.
Upon seeing Oliver and John come into her office, she stood up and gave them a curt smile. “It’s nice to meet you again, Mr. John, and for the first time, meeting you, Mr. Oliver. My name is Lauren, chief of the police in this district.”
Lauren then extended her arm out to shake hands with both men before directing them to sit on the sofa while she took a seat opposite from them.
As soon as the chief sat down, she glanced at Oliver and gave him a thorough inspection from head to toe. Her sharp gaze seemed to be staring right through him, like she could see everything about him with just one look.
It was making Oliver uncomfortable because he felt like she somehow became a different person the moment she sat down, judging by her behavior.
The young man coughed and broke the awkward silence. “Chief Lauren, what can I help you with?”
The chief shook her head and waved her hand. “Oh no, there’s no need to worry about anything, Mr. Oliver. I’ve heard from Mr. John here about what happened, and we’ve already made arrangements for the aftermath. You don’t have to worry about what’s going to happen next.”
Oliver furrowed his brow, feeling like the chief was acting suspiciously. “Then why do you want to meet me, Chief Lauren? Surely you must have a reason for inviting me here today.”
The chief nodded her head and looked at John, who understood her unspoken instructions and got up from his seat, excusing himself. “I’m going to wait outside, Mr. Oliver.”
Once the door closed shut behind him, Lauren leaned forward and locked eyes with Oliver, her gaze serious. “Well then, let me get straight to the point, Mr. Oliver. I’m one of the people who are under the Ashfords’ thumb in this city. Which means that I’m also under your thumb, so to speak.”
“I don’t quite understand…” Oliver trailed off, not knowing where the conversation was heading.
“Oh, I’m sure you know what I mean by this, Mr. Oliver. Every powerful man in the city has several police officers working for them because they all do some shady business, and they have to cover it up or make things disappear. That’s how the world works.” The chief explained, then took out a cigarette and lit it with a match, placing it in between her glossy red lips. “But now that you’re going to inherit your family’s fortune and business, I am going to pledge my allegiance to you as well.”
She continued talking after taking a long drag of her cigarette. “Of course, I won’t be doing this for free. You understand, don’t you?” She said, smoke escaping her mouth with every word she spoke.
“I see now, Chief,” Oliver said, starting to understand the situation. “So you called me here to have a talk about the ‘arrangements’ we need to make for our future business together, right?”
Lauren smirked and nodded her head as she heard that response. “Indeed, Mr. Oliver. There are a few ‘arrangements’ I have in mind.”
Her smirk faded away when she put out her cigarette, and a serious expression took over her face. “As you know, Mr. Oliver, this city is full of corruption, crime, violence, and everything that goes along with it. So I hope you won’t take action like today by breaking some big shots’ limbs without considering the consequences that may arise.”
Then she stared at the young man straight in the eyes before continuing, “Because if anything like what happened today happens again, then it won’t be easy to cover it up or make it go away. Do you understand, Mr. Oliver?”
Oliver sighed and thought about how she was right in her words. After all, he didn’t think through things when he decided to break that guy’s limbs. Because if he had, then he wouldn’t have caused such a scene that ended up escalating the situation.
It was because of that moment of impulsiveness and anger that led to everyone being threatened, and they had to escape in their car while getting chased and shot at. It wasn’t a good situation to be in.
“Alright, chief, I got it. It won’t happen again.” Oliver promised and leaned against the sofa with his arms crossed over his chest. “Is there anything else we need to talk about? Otherwise, I’d like to get going back home now, Chief Lauren.”
Lauren took another drag of her cigarette before blowing out a puff of smoke in front of her, giving the young man a sultry look. “No, Mr. Oliver. We can discuss other things at another time. It would be a good idea to meet up again next week or so if possible.”
As she finished saying that, Lauren stood up and extended her hand for a handshake with Oliver, who stood up and shook hands with her.
“I’ll be in contact soon, Chief.” Oliver said and left the room with her staring at his back in a heated manner.
“Mr. John, I’ve finished talking with the chief.” Oliver informed the lawyer, who stood outside waiting for him. “And we’re leaving.”
John nodded his head. “Okay then. The cars are ready to go, Mr. Oliver. Let’s head out.”
