Chapter 135: Request

Chapter 135

“You will be working here from today. Your job is to tend to the mages in their training. What they require, you get it for them from the storage. The storage is over there.” A servant explained my duty to me as we went around a separate building that housed mage training rooms.

“When you go to the storage, you have to have a mage’s plaque with you, and you must make sure to inventory everything when you leave the storage. Thefts are not tolerated.” He warned me against having any funny ideas as he walked me through the storage where various herbs and cores were.

“What if I don’t take anything and something still goes missing?” I asked, just to be sure.

“Then you will all be punished.” The servant simply said before moving on.

“These are practice dummies. They regenerate when mages practice their skills on them. But they require a mana crystal to regenerate, so make sure to keep them fully stocked. I advise you to change one before the existing one fully exhausts. That way mages won’t get angry.” The servant explained, and also eyed a few mages in the corner harassing a female servant.

Since sexual acts didn’t exist, their harassment consisted of physically hitting her.

“If you don’t keep them happy, they might mistake you for the practice dummy.” The servant said in a low voice.

“Understood,” I replied.

I wasn’t worried about the rest. Even the women, since they couldn’t be sexually assaulted in this world. But as for physical assault, well, that was something they would have to bear with for now. There’s nothing I can do about it.

That was the fate of a commoner after all.

“Also, this is for you.” He handed me a paper before he left, leaving me to do my tasks.

I unfolded the crude paper, which was made from some sort of special material, but not skin like commoners used, and read its contents.

“You are to come to the left wing of the castle at sundown every day.”

I had observed Zara’s writing enough by staying by her side for the last few weeks that I was well aware of her handwriting.

Haa…

I got to work. I made sure to do everything by the book. Mistake here could be interpreted as a mistake against the Lord, which could also go as far as beheading, and not just of your own, either.

I could only hope the rest would keep their emotions in check and not cause any trouble. It was just temporary for now, that much I knew, but if they didn’t behave, this could be our permanent life.

The day ended without me catching the eyes of the mages. Some were diligent in their training and focused on nothing else, while some were less talented and took out that frustration on servants who made even the slightest of mistakes, such as breathing too loudly or looking at them from the wrong side.

One was assaulted just because he blinked his eyes too many times.

Haa…

Barbaric times.

There was still about an hour left in the sundown when we were all relieved of our duties and told to return to our servant quarters. Since I had time, I went back to the quarters to let everyone know where I would be going and also warn them against any impulsive actions.

Should have done that in the morning, but I didn’t know things would be so bad here. Well, what else was I expecting from this era anyway?

It seems I was too late, and my decision not to warn them in the morning was wrong. When I arrived at Rayla’s room, I found her crying, and inside, I could hear Martha yelling out loud.

I entered the room to find two people injured. Sandra had a cut across her face, and Lucas had an injured shoulder, which was still bleeding.

“Haa…”

I was sighing a lot these days. Maybe I was backed up.

[Heal]

[Regenerate]

[MP -100]

[MP -1000]

I cast heal and regenerate on both of them to close up their wounds and then cleanse to prevent any sort of infection.

“Listen, you will go nowhere if you catch their eyes like that, alright?” I warned them all against what could happen here if any of them crossed their boundaries.

While I could have gone and gotten revenge for them, it was still better not to act out yet. Not this soon anyway.

“Then do we take this every day?!” Martha asked out loud.

“Yes.” I simply but firmly replied.

“…”

“…”

“Look, Lady Zara has summoned me to visit her. I’ll talk to her tonight and change your positions to attendants, alright? I can only hope she listens, and that could solve our temporary problems.” I soothed them all with hope and comforted them for some time before warning them again not to go out for dinner and not even open their doors, since senior servants might pick on them if they went out, or they might even come to their doors.

“Just stay here in Mother’s room, and stick together. Here, eat this for dinner. I can see none of you ate anything during the day.” I purchased different kinds of dishes from the inventory, enough to fill the bed, and warned them against leaving the rooms once again, even to shit.

Just in case, I purchased a shield item and used it to block the door. Now no one could cross the barrier, whether from the inside or the outside.

There was little time left until the time I was supposed to arrive, so I ran at full speed to make my way to the left wing. Once I arrived, I told the guard, and he led me inside and took me where I was supposed to go. I guess he was already informed of my arrival and where to take me after that.

Walking through the hallways of the castle, I was led to a garden which was on the left side of the castle. I had no doubt there would be more gardens in this giant castle like this.

In the middle of the garden, there were tiles embedded in the ground to make a footing. They weren’t made from rocks, but actual tiles, made from limestone or something like that.

In the middle of the stage was a tea table with four chairs around it. On one of the chairs was Zara, while the rest were empty. Behind her stood two women in the traditional maid uniforms of this timeline.

“Lady Zara.” I greeted her with a full, courteous bow.

“You don’t have to behave like that here,” Zara said nonchalantly.

“Forgive me, Lady Zara, but I think I have to,” I replied.

“Why? Did something happen?” Zara asked.

“…”

“What happened?” Zara asked.

I eyed the maids behind Zara and contemplated whether to answer that question or not.

“Look at me when you answer.” Zara bought my act and didn’t like that I was more afraid of the maids than her here.

Well, we both knew it wasn’t about the maids. It was about Carlson and his territory. It was a clear show that Zara had no power here, as shown by how we were treated right after we got here, even though we were told that we would be respectful attendants of Zara and her family.

“Forgive me, Lady Zara.” I immediately bowed to apologize and told her about what happened to us during the day. Of course, I exaggerated a lot, and since I also told her that I had healed their injuries with magic, she had no way of verifying whether their injuries were as severe as I said they were.

“Haa…” Zara sighed for a while before she looked at her maids and said, “You two are relieved of your duty. Go back to your former positions.”

“…Yes, my lady.” I had a feeling those maids wanted to argue, but they knew well what that would bring about, so they remained silent and just obediently obeyed for now.

Twenty bucks, they were going to report this to the higher-ups.

“In the morning, bring your mother and sisters to my room. They will be my maids from tomorrow onwards. As for Lucas… send her to Cassandra. Tell him not to tell her about this incident. She won’t be too happy about that.” Zara instructed.

Well, that was easier than I expected. Since things worked out so flawlessly, I didn’t remain on the topic anymore.

“Then, shall we move on to why I am here?” I asked.

“Sure.” She said, before she stood up and began to walk, “Follow me to my chambers. It will help when you have to bring your family to me in the morning.”

“Understood, Lady Zara,” I replied and followed.

Bummer, though. I wanted to have some garden sex, but I guess that would have to wait. I guess I should teach Zara some new positions for now.
