Chapter 134
“When we arrive at the capital, make sure not to get separated from us.” Carlson explicitly told me that, which showed how much he valued me. I nodded and relayed the message to my family as well.
If this capital city were just like all the other fantasy medieval cities, then the number of commoners here would be very small compared to the nobles. Just like back in town, the capital would be divided into districts, and since we will be going with Carlson, it also means we will be going to the innermost district.
The inner district, where commoners were scarce, if not nonexistent, would be very hard for us commoners, especially considering we came from a backwater town whose lord was only a knight, not even a small-time lord.
“Welcome to Artemis.” Carlson grandly said as we passed through the grand gates of the capital. And it was only the outer district. The expressions on my family members’ faces were what you would expect. Of country bumpkins.
Rayla and her kids weren’t that surprised, which meant they had been here before, but not that many times, I’ll tell you that much. They, in the end, belonged to the family of a mere knight. Even if that knight had managed to get a town for his services to the king.
The travel time from the outer district to the inner district took about half a day; that was how massive this city was. Kind of reminded me of the imperial city of the Chinese dynasties in the Murim world.
But this was still small compared to that kind of city. When we arrived at the inner district, the guards stationed at the gate weren’t just mere soldiers. They were full-fledged knights. They weren’t as strong as Hector, but they were definitely as strong as the knight chick that was with Ruthhaven.
The check was a little stern compared to the outer district. They checked our belongings and showed proper scorn to us even in the presence of Carlson.
Anyway, we managed to pass through that gate as well, but what happened at the core district gate…
Fwoo…
Each and every knight was as strong as Hector, and not to mention, they weren’t even the ones leading them. The one leading them was…
“Good evening, Lord Carlson. Welcome back to the royal capital.” The knight who greeted Carlson with the proper decorum was at the very least an A rank, if not more. Kind of made me wonder why he wasn’t a lord, or had his own territory, and was just a mere guard on this gate.
“It is good to be back. May we pass?” Carlson, who was obviously higher in terms of power and status, asked, rather politely, for his status at that.
“Obviously. But I do have to ask, forgive me, but…” He eyed us. Since we were with Carlson, our entry was guaranteed, but he wanted to make sure there were no mishaps. He wasn’t even looking down on us like the knights of the inner district guard post.
“People of talent, and servants. I have permission from the queen, if you’d like that.” Carlson politely replied, just as the knight had politely asked.
“It won’t be necessary. They are with you, Lord Carlson, after all.” The knight remained respectful and polite to the end before he turned to his men and shouted, “Raise the gates!”
The gate, even bigger than the outer or inner district gates, began to rise slowly. It wasn’t opened fully, just enough for our convoy to pass through.
“Then, please have a good day, Lord Carlson.” The knight bowed and bid us farewell.
The rest of the journey, which lasted about an hour, ended when we arrived at a massive mansion. No, it was wrong to call it a mansion. Would have been correct to call it a castle.
It wasn’t as big as a typical castle, but it was still massive enough for a lord. That alone told me how powerful Carlson was, given the giant castle I could see in the distance, which presumably belonged to the royal family, and this one was second to that one.
“The servants would guide you to your temporary quarters. You will all have different tasks starting tomorrow, so rest for the night.”
Following Carlson’s directive, my family and I were separated and taken to the left wing of the estate, still out of the main castle.
I could see a triple-story building in the distance. It seemed like a typical apartment building, only medieval style.
I could see servants going in and out, so one could say the building was reserved for the servants to live.
“The left corridor of the third floor is yours. There are four rooms, so two of you will have to share.” The servant who guided us led us to our rooms and let us know everything we needed to know. When was breakfast, details about lunch, if we were lucky enough to get any during our duty during the day, and the time of dinner, which was a battlefield because of how the bigwig servants would eat everything first and leave crumbs for the masses to fight over.
“I think Mother and I should share one room, and the rest of you can have one room each,” I suggested.
But…
“Nonsense. Jack, you work the most among us. You should have a room alone.” Rayla immediately denied.
“She’s right, Jack. Martha and I will share one.” Sandra, ever the good girl, also interjected with an opinion of her own.
If only I could tell them not to be so considerate of me.
“Haa… Alright.”
The only reason I caved in so quickly was that Rayla would still be alone in her room, which meant I could use any good excuse, such as missing my supposed father or missing her, to sleep with her and shag her all night nonstop.
Anyway, the journey to the capital had taken well over a month. Even though the kingdom was merely the size of China, given that we were traveling by carriage and took breaks in between in towns and cities, the journey stretched to over a month easily.
Everyone was tired because of that, so I didn’t have any luck that night either. It meant that for one good month, I didn’t have any penal action.
Sure, I groped the women a few times, ate their pussies, used their mouths whenever I had the chance, but there was not enough time to enjoy myself properly with a good old pussy action.
Unlucky for me again, the breakfast that the servant told us about arrived three hours later. There wasn’t even enough time to sleep properly. But should have expected that, after all, the servants at this time usually begin their morning even before dawn.
I had no problem with that, but…
“Ugh…”
“I’m still tired.”
“Try to hold on, my daughters.”
“They should have given us at least one day to rest.”
Martha groaned, Sandra complained, Rayla soothed her daughters, and Lucas was grumpy.
And to add to that grumpiness…
“This is all?” Lucas asked as he looked at his tray. One bread and a lousy bowl of thin soup with a single cube of carrot added, like it was a generous gesture.
“Yes. Why? Do you expect more?” The chef who was handing out food asked rudely.
“But what about that food?!” Martha pointed at the roasted beast meat and various dishes, which weren’t delicacies, exactly, but still extravagant enough compared to the meal we had gotten.
“You dare try to covet that food? Those dishes are only for the noble servants. You commoners can just get that. Be glad you’re even getting that. It’s all because you’re hired by the lord, especially; otherwise, you would be waiting for breakfast to end, and then eat whatever was left. If there was any left.”
Somehow, I didn’t doubt that.
He was right. Commoners in this era had no rights. Added to the fact that we were brought by the lord himself, so we were hated on the charges of nepotism.
“It’s alright, sir. We shall graciously eat what we’ve gotten.” Rayla replied with a smile and took us all to a side, even though Lucas was very reluctant.
Well, he was also right in his own place. Back home, he could at least eat good food and live in a good house, albeit only for a few months. But here, he was as good as a servant. Actually, lower than a servant, given this treatment.
“Follow me back to our rooms.” I didn’t sit down and made my way out of the cafeteria on the first floor. We had thirty minutes before we had to follow a servant to our designated duties. Enough time so when we arrived at my room, I waved my hand and dishes of various kinds appeared from my inventory.
“Eat up.”
I said, and they happily gorged.
