Chapter 13: The Gathering

Ava knew something was wrong the moment she woke up.

It wasn’t the room—still unfamiliar, still carrying that faint scent of pine and something distinctly… him.

It wasn’t the silence either.

It was the air.

Heavy.

Charged.

Like the entire pack was holding its breath.

She sat up slowly, pressing her fingers to her wrist. The mark pulsed faintly beneath her skin, warmer than it had been the night before.

Stronger.

“Great,” she muttered. “That’s definitely not concerning.”

A sharp knock sounded on the door.

Before she could respond, it opened.

Kael stepped inside.

Fully dressed. Already alert. Already in control.

Like he hadn’t slept at all.

Which—knowing him—might actually be true.

“Get dressed,” he said.

Ava blinked. “Good morning to you too.”

“We’re calling a gathering.”

That got her attention.

“A gathering?” she repeated. “Like… everyone?”

“Yes.”

“And I’m assuming this has something to do with me.”

Kael didn’t deny it.

“That’s not ominous at all,” she sighed, swinging her legs off the bed. “Do I at least get a warning about what’s about to happen?”

“You’ll stand beside me.”

Ava paused.

Something about the way he said it—

Not asked.

Not suggested.

Stated.

“You really don’t ease people into things, do you?” she said.

Kael’s gaze softened—just slightly.

“No.”

Ava huffed a quiet breath. “Figures.”

The clearing was already full when they arrived.

Wolves stood in a wide circle, their presence pressing in from all sides. Conversations had died down the moment Kael stepped forward.

And just like before—

All eyes turned to her.

But this time—

It wasn’t just curiosity.

It was expectation.

Ava felt it immediately.

Her instincts reacted before her thoughts could catch up—her spine straightening, her chin lifting slightly as she stepped forward beside Kael.

She wasn’t shrinking.

Not anymore.

And the strange part?

It felt natural.

Kael moved to the center of the clearing, his presence commanding instant silence.

Ava stayed at his side.

Close.

Exactly where he said she would be.

“This pack has always stood on strength,” Kael’s voice carried easily, firm and unwavering. “On loyalty. On knowing where we stand.”

Ava’s gaze flicked briefly across the crowd.

Some faces were neutral.

Some cautious.

Some—

Hostile.

Lila stood near the front.

Still. Watchful.

Her expression carefully controlled.

“But something has changed,” Kael continued. “Something none of us can ignore.”

His hand moved—

Not abruptly.

Not forcefully.

But deliberately.

He reached for Ava’s wrist.

And lifted it.

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

The mark was visible now.

Faint—but undeniable.

Ava felt the shift instantly.

The reaction.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

But something close.

Recognition.

Respect.

And beneath it—

Uncertainty.

“She is not just human,” Kael said.

Ava swallowed slightly, her pulse quickening as the attention sharpened further.

“She carries a bond,” he continued. “One that connects her directly to me.”

The murmurs grew louder.

Ava’s heart pounded harder.

Because even she didn’t fully understand what he was saying.

Not really.

“Then explain it.”

The voice cut through the crowd.

Clear.

Sharp.

Lila stepped forward.

Of course she did.

Ava resisted the urge to sigh.

“She shows up out of nowhere,” Lila continued, her gaze locked onto Ava. “Triggers a reaction none of us have felt before. Draws rogues into our territory.”

Her eyes flicked briefly to Kael.

“And you expect us to accept her without question?”

Kael didn’t move.

Didn’t flinch.

“I expect you to trust my judgment.”

“And if your judgment is compromised?” Lila challenged.

Silence fell.

Sharp.

Tense.

Ava felt it again—

That pressure building beneath her skin.

That heat.

The mark pulsed harder.

Faster.

Her breathing hitched slightly.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something else.

Something rising.

“She’s not wrong,” Ava said suddenly.

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

Every head turned toward her.

Even Kael.

Ava stepped forward slightly.

Not away from him—

But not hidden behind him either.

“If I were you,” she continued, her voice steady despite the storm building inside her, “I’d be asking the same questions.”

Lila’s brow lifted slightly.

Surprised.

Good.

Ava held her gaze. “I don’t know what I am. Not fully. But I didn’t come here to cause problems.”

The mark flared again.

Stronger.

Hotter.

Ava gasped softly, her hand instinctively tightening at her side as the energy surged through her body.

The air shifted.

This time—

Everyone felt it.

A low murmur spread through the pack, more unsettled now.

More aware.

“What is that…” someone whispered.

Ava barely heard it.

Because suddenly—

Everything felt too sharp.

Too loud.

Too close.

Her senses stretched outward, pulling in every heartbeat, every movement, every breath around her.

And then—

It snapped.

Not painfully.

But powerfully.

A wave of energy pulsed outward from her.

Invisible—

But undeniable.

The entire clearing stilled.

Wolves froze.

Some took a step back.

Others lowered their heads instinctively.

Ava’s breath came fast as the sensation faded just enough for her to think again.

“What did I just do?” she whispered.

Kael was already beside her.

Closer than before.

His hand closed around hers.

Grounding.

Steady.

His gaze was locked on her—

Not shocked.

Not afraid.

Certain.

“You showed them,” he said quietly, “why they should listen.”

Ava let out a shaky breath. “That wasn’t exactly intentional.”

“It doesn’t need to be.”

Across from them, Lila stood very still.

But this time—

There was no dismissal in her expression.

No cold superiority.

Only focus.

Sharp.

Calculating.

And something else.

Concern.

“That wasn’t normal,” she said.

“No,” Kael agreed. “It wasn’t.”

The silence stretched.

Then—

Slowly—

One by one—

Wolves began to lower their heads.

Not submission to Kael.

Not entirely.

Something else.

Something directed at her.

Ava stared, her pulse still racing.

“What are they doing?” she asked under her breath.

Kael’s grip tightened slightly.

“Acknowledging you.”

Ava blinked. “For what?”

His gaze didn’t waver.

“For what you are becoming.”

The words settled heavily between them.

Ava swallowed.

Because for the first time—

This didn’t feel like something she could walk away from.

This wasn’t confusion anymore.

Or coincidence.

This was real.

And whatever she was—

Whatever this bond meant—

It was only getting stronger.

As the crowd slowly began to disperse, tension lingered in the air like a storm that hadn’t fully passed.

Lila didn’t leave.

Of course she didn’t.

She stepped forward again, slower this time.

More measured.

Her gaze rested on Ava—not hostile.

Not friendly.

Assessing.

“You felt it too,” Ava said quietly.

Lila didn’t deny it.

“That kind of power doesn’t appear without consequence.”

Ava exhaled. “Yeah, I’m starting to realize that.”

Lila’s eyes flicked briefly to Kael—then back to her.

“If you lose control,” she said, her voice lower now, more serious, “it won’t just affect you.”

“I know.”

“Do you?” Lila challenged softly.

Ava held her gaze.

Didn’t look away.

“I will.”

For a moment—

Something shifted between them.

Not trust.

Not yet.

But something closer to respect.

Lila gave a small nod.

Then stepped back.

“Then prove it.”

And just like that—

She was gone.

Ava let out a long breath once the clearing finally emptied.

“Well,” she muttered, “that went… better than expected.”

Kael’s hand was still around hers.

Still steady.

Still grounding.

“You didn’t break,” he said.

Ava glanced at him. “Pretty sure I almost did.”

“But you didn’t.”

Ava huffed softly. “You have a very different definition of ‘fine’ than I do.”

Kael stepped closer.

That familiar pull returning instantly.

Stronger now.

More undeniable.

“You’re stronger than you think.”

Ava met his gaze.

And for once—

She didn’t argue.

Because after what just happened—

She wasn’t so sure anymore.
